Last weekend I was lucky enough to see Dave Hause and Brian Fallon at a joint called The Black Cat in downtown D.C. My mind is a little too blown for a full show review, but needless to say it kicked ten tons of ass, it did. The sound was great, the venue good and packed, and the atmosphere was incredible. This felt less like a gig and more of a campfire sing-a-long that Fallon and Hause was leading, filled with beer, stories, requests, and a crowd that knew every word to every song. Actually, the crowd knew that and then some, often singing along to all the backing vocals too. This was a pretty intimate environment, and guys answered questions, played request, shot down requests, and generally had a fun time as did everyone in the building.
A couple of videos that highlight the night. The first is a song from the album The ’59 Sound called Casanova, Baby! It missed a little at the front, but it doesn’t hinder the fact that the song is pretty awesome. This is one song that really displayed the “campfire sing-a-long” feeling as the entire crowd sang the harmonizing back-up part during the bridge. Also, can see us in the front row towards the end.
The second video is a cover of Tegan and Sara’s “Call It Off” when Dave Hause came back up to do covers.
All in all, it was a fantastic show and I highly recommend you check out either Brian solo or The Gaslight Anthem when they roll through your town. Also, I can’t wait till this band blows up big this summer when their newest release American Slang comes out. And by “blow up big” I mean “big like, er, The Kings of Leon big” and maybe not “U2 big.”
This blarg represents the opinions of Hagy, Jude Matthews, and Chris Raines. We promote artists from the underground or our local scene. Sometimes, it’s a forum for us to yell at each other about how much (insert band) used to (insert adjective) before they (either sold out or broke up) and it’s (super cool or antirad) to like them now. One thing we do share in common is that we honestly believe that the world is full of amazing music and not all of it is lucky enough to find its way on to the radio or MTV.
